The Rhine Flowed a Little Swifter

 

When the Allied armies finally reached the Rhine in the spring of 1945, most of the troops performed a little male ritual to express their contempt for all things German. It is not known exactly how many men peed into the Rhine—reportedly several thousand— but several notables also indulged. The entire British Imperial General Staff let loose, led by Winston Churchill (who apparently did so with great relish while being cheered on by American troops, who had just themselves performed the ceremony) and George S. Patton, who was photographed for posterity.
